Penile Papules or Pearly Penile Papules is a problem that is otherwise known as Hirsuties coronae glandis and “hirsutoid papillomas”. These are tiny, harmless bumps found circumferentially around the corona or sulcus of the male genitals or glans penis. The size of the bumps may be 1 to 3 mm. Experts consider that these are caused by anatomical variations in the body. According to an estimate, more than 25% of men are affected by this problem. Mostly, uncircumcised men are more susceptible to be affected by this problem. In general, younger men are more prone to be affected by this than slightly older people. This means that as people age or if they get themselves circumcised, this problem can be avoided.
Ironically, a few men have an opinion that these bumps stimulate their sexual pleasure, though researches are still being conducted to prove this point. But, it is a proven fact that the cause of these bumps is not due to sexual activity. It is also proved that this affliction is not due to other sexually transmitted diseases.
These bumps are also considered as degenerated or rudimentary remnants of the penile spines. In fact, penile papules are found in many other primates also. But, though several tests have been conducted on humans, it has not been found which DNA sequence causes these bumps in certain people and why it does not affect many others. Tests have revealed that in certain species, orgasms are quickened by these penile spines.
Likewise, females may be affected by a similar problem called vestibular papillomatosis of the vulva that is otherwise known as Hirsuties papillaris vulvae but this can not be construed as a HPV infection. As hirsuties papillaris is considered as the effect of a normal variation in the anatomy of men, vestibular papillomatosis of the vulva is also caused by an anatomical variation in females.
Though Penile Papules does not cause any problem to the health of the men who have been affected by it, it certainly is considered as a displeasing affliction. Especially, those who have an obsession with aesthetics, will find these bumps highly distasteful. But, doctors advise against their removal, unless they cause other serious problems to the affected people.
Use of a CO2 laser can be a good treatment for getting rid of this problem but it should be taken from a qualified and experienced dermatologist. In this treatment, the papules are vaporized. The treatment does not take much time and it can be finished in a few minutes. This is a simple procedure also and hence, there is no necessity for a hospital stay. The affected person may not feel much discomfort due to this procedure. The person will be absolutely normal within a few days.
There is one more treatment that involves electrosurgery. This electrosurgical procedure that is performed with a hyfrecator will take only about an hour. Both the CO2 laser treatment and the electrosurgical procedure do not need hospitalization and they are only out-patient treatments. Only if there are complications, doctors may advise in-patient treatment.
Of course, patients can opt for the direct surgical excision procedure also for getting rid of penile papules. This will be carried out with a scalpel. As soon as the problem lesions are removed, appropriate sutures will be done at the spots. This procedure is quite effective but the downtime for getting back to the normal state may be longer in this. In certain cases, there may be complications and risks. The doctor must examine and evaluate the patients before deciding to conduct this procedure.
Unfortunately, many people mistake these bumps as HPV warts. But, it is a big myth. Only anatomical variations cause this problem. There are some home remedies for curing this problem. The affected people can search on the Internet and find the most appropriate home remedies that suit them. But, these people are warned that they should not choose dangerous treatments or techniques because such wrong choices may result in genital mutilation that can even be permanent. The best way is to consult competent dermatologists because there are effective and safe treatments in dermatology for treating this problem. Even when home remedies are chosen, patients should be careful not to choose treatments that involve use of corrosive substances. Likewise, the affected people should not opt for self-surgery also because due to this, there can be permanent damage to their sexual life. Surgeries or procedures should be got done only by a competent physician or dermatologist and only techniques that have been proved to be effective and safe should be used.
